Lionel Konstabel was born on 2nd December 1977 in Maccassar. He is one of 4 children, 3 sons and 1 daughter of a pastoral family. Like many pastoral children Lionel grew up in church where his father Pastor Lionel was leader of the congregation.
At the age of 10 years Lionel started to play as a drummer at church with his father and his brothers. Even though he played drums he was very much interested in playing the guitar. His dad was very strict on the style of playing in the house of The Lord.
In the year 2000 Lionel started his musical career with the legendary jazz band N2 who also hale from Maccassar. This was when his musical journey started in the professional arena. While playing with the band N2 Lionel collaborate with many celebrities and international artists. Lionel with band N2 collaborated with Vicky Sampson, the late Robbie Jansen, Ernie Smith, Allou April, the late Hugh Masekella, Loukmaan Adams, Alastair Isobel and many other local celebrities. Lionel did many collaborations with Jimmy Dludlu. While playing with the band N2. Lionel also played at many shows and concerts with Jimmy Dludlu. Lionel played with the band N2 until the year 2004
Lionel also met international guitarist Jonathan Butler in the year 2007 and was his guitar technician for one of his concerts in Cape Town. In 2011 Lionel did an educational theatre production for Dawid Kramer called “Krismis van Map Jacobs”. He together with Donvino Prince and Jonathan Rubain wrote the musical parts of this book with Dawid Kramer.
In 2013 Lionel started playing with an eight piece band called Touch Down. He played with this band for 2 years. Here he met the drummer Bjorn Petersen who helped him to travel overseas as an artist. Lionel toured Dubai, Spain, Germany, Italy and Morocco until 2017 as an supporting artist with different bands.
Lionel registered his company Liokon Production in 2017 as a solo artist. He did many productions as solo artist such as:
• An All White Party (sold out event)
• Me Lionel Konstabel at Empire’s Lounge (sold out event)
• Lionel Birthday celebration with band N2
• and many private functions.
